Ethiopia and Portugal move to deepen cooperation across trade, investment and connectivity

Addis Ababa, April 14, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia and Portugal have agreed to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in key economic and diplomatic areas following talks held between the two countries’ foreign ministers in Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos, held discussions with Portugal’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, focusing on ways to expand cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, and environmental protection.

Gedion Timothewos noted that Ethiopia and Portugal share a longstanding historical relationship, underscoring the importance of building on this foundation to further strengthen bilateral engagement across priority sectors.

For his part, Paulo Rangel highlighted that the launch of direct air connectivity between the two countries presents a significant opportunity to deepen economic and people-to-people ties.

The two ministers also agreed to convene a bilateral political consultation in the near future and to enhance cooperation within multilateral forums.
