Ethiopia Lays Foundations for Broad-Based Prosperity Through National Transformation: GCS
Addis Ababa, September 7, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia is laying the foundations for broad-based prosperity by mobilizing its national capabilities, expanding productive sectors and advancing major infrastructure and institutional reforms, the Government Communication Service (GCS) said.
The GCS made the remarks in a statement issued on Pagume 2, observed as the Day of Renewal under the overarching theme “Ethiopia’s Renewal,” highlighting the country’s efforts to turn its development ambitions into tangible and sustainable progress.
It said Ethiopia is pursuing a comprehensive development path guided by the Medemer policy framework and strategic national plans, with a focus on overcoming longstanding challenges and converting them into opportunities for sustainable growth.
The statement highlighted the transformation underway at Ethiopian Airlines, noting that the national carrier is advancing major initiatives, including the Bishoftu International Airport project, as part of its forward-looking expansion.
It also pointed to the expansion of existing and emerging tourism destinations, alongside efforts to strengthen agriculture and reduce its dependence on rainfall while creating employment opportunities in both rural and urban areas.
The GCS said Ethiopia is simultaneously diversifying its renewable energy base, with investments spanning hydropower, wind, solar, geothermal and nuclear energy.
Urban renewal and integrated infrastructure development are also expanding, while improvements in transport and logistics are strengthening connectivity and supporting Ethiopia’s emerging role as a regional renewable-energy hub, it said.
The statement further underscored efforts to harness the country’s mineral resources in a manner that supports the interests of future generations, describing the combination of economic diversification, infrastructure expansion and institutional development as part of the foundations being built for sustained growth.
Beyond physical development, the GCS emphasized the role of citizens in strengthening democratic institutions and advancing national aspirations.
It cited public participation in the 7th General Election, growing annual participation in the Green Legacy Initiative, and the National Dialogue as examples of citizen engagement in national affairs.
The GCS said the National Dialogue, in particular, reflects an approach of addressing political differences through dialogue and consensus-building.
It described the Day of Renewal as an opportunity to recognize these developments while renewing the country’s commitment to further progress.
The observance, it said, centers on the foundations being built through democratic institution-building, development of a diversified economy, modernization of urban and rural livelihoods, expansion of renewable energy and upgrading of transport infrastructure.
As Ethiopia approaches the end of the outgoing 2018 Ethiopian calendar year, the five-day Pagume observance under “Ethiopia’s Renewal” provides a period for reflecting on the year’s achievements, assessing remaining gaps and renewing the country’s commitment to the priorities of 2019 E.C.
