Ethiopia Takes Green Legacy Experience Across Africa, Deploying Youth to Drive Environmental Action

Addis Ababa, September 3, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia is taking its Green Legacy experience beyond its borders, deploying 24 young people to Zimbabwe, Ghana and Nigeria to share the country’s approaches to environmental conservation, afforestation and tree planting under the “Plant Africa Fraternity Initiative.”

Prosperity Party Youth Wing Vice President and Head of the Main Office Abang Kumudan said the initiative is being implemented for the second time, with eight Ethiopian youths traveling to each of the three countries. The programme will subsequently expand to other African countries, she said.

The initiative is designed not only to share Ethiopia’s experience but also to strengthen diplomatic and people-to-people ties with participating countries. It builds on a similar tree-planting activity undertaken in Pakistan last year.

The youth deployment comes as Ethiopia continues to expand the scale of its Green Legacy campaign. On August 3, the country planted 805.3 million tree seedlings in a single day, surpassing its target of 800 million.

Over the past seven years, more than 48 billion seedlings have been planted across Ethiopia, supporting efforts to restore degraded landscapes, expand forest coverage and strengthen climate action.

Launched in 2019 under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the Green Legacy Initiative has grown into a flagship environmental programme, while its growing international outreach is positioning Ethiopia’s experience as a platform for broader African cooperation on environmental restoration and climate action.
