Ethiopia to Mark 19th National Flag Day on Monday, Emphasizing National Consensus and Unity

Addis Ababa, October 9, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia will observe the 19th National Flag Day next Monday in the presence of President Taye Atske-Selassie, under the theme “Our Flag for National Consensus and Unity,” the House of Peoples’ Representatives has announced.

The annual observance pays tribute to Ethiopia’s national flag, a symbol of sovereignty and national dignity that generations of Ethiopians have defended through immense sacrifice, shedding their blood and giving their lives to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity and honour.

This year’s celebration will take place across Ethiopia through various programmes coordinated by the House of Peoples’ Representatives, reflecting the country’s current national priorities and prevailing realities.

At the central ceremony, President Taye will preside over the flag-raising ceremony, accompanied by the Ethiopian National Defence Force’s marching band and honour guard.

The commemoration will also take place simultaneously across regional states and city administrations, government institutions, schools, and Ethiopian embassies and consulates abroad, extending the observance to Ethiopians at home and across the world.

The annual Flag Day provides an occasion to reaffirm the national values embodied by the Ethiopian flag, with this year’s theme placing national consensus and unity at the centre of the commemoration.
