Ethiopia, U.S. Explore Critical Minerals as New Avenue for Strategic Economic Partnership

Addis Ababa, August 15, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic and economic relations, with the two sides exploring new areas of cooperation and discussing shared priorities.

Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the United States Binalf Andualem and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia held wide-ranging discussions on current national and regional developments, as well as strategic priorities of mutual interest.

The discussions underscored the importance of sustained engagement and close collaboration between the two countries in addressing complex political, economic and security challenges. They also highlighted the value of continued dialogue as Ethiopia and the United States seek to advance mutually beneficial areas of cooperation.

Economic cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, with the two sides exploring opportunities to further expand bilateral economic engagement. Ethiopia’s critical mining sector was highlighted as an area with significant potential for investment, value addition and long-term partnership.

The discussions also reflect the broader scope of Ethiopia–U.S. relations, which encompass diplomatic engagement and cooperation across political, economic and security spheres. Both countries have maintained longstanding dialogue on regional developments, particularly matters affecting peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
