Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed receives Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov for bilateral talks
Addis Ababa, July 7, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed received Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his delegation for bilateral talks focusing on Ethiopia-Russia relations and opportunities for further cooperation in Addis Ababa today.
In a social media post following the meeting, the Prime Minister said the discussions centered on bilateral relations and exploring new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.
Lavrov arrived in Addis Ababa on July 6, 2026, for an official visit to Ethiopia, marking the beginning of his working trip to several African countries. Upon arrival, he was received by Ethiopian officials as he commenced his engagements in the capital.
During his visit, the Russian Foreign Minister held talks with Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos, with the two sides discussing ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas including trade, investment and technology transfer, as well as coordination on regional and global issues.
Lavrov also participated in high-level consultations with the African Union Commission, where he met AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf to discuss Africa-Russia relations, peace and security, global governance reforms, and areas for expanded partnership.
