Ethiopia’s Upper House Elects Ms. Muferihat Kamil as Chief Speaker and Mr. Desta Ledamo as Her Deputy

Addis Ababa, October 5, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s House of Federation has elected Ms. Muferihat Kamil as Chief Speaker and Mr. Desta Ledamo as Deputy Speaker, constituting the leadership of the upper house as the 7th parliamentary term gets underway.

The elections were held during the House’s inaugural session for the first working year of the new parliamentary term, conducted in the presence of President Taye Atske-Selassie.

Ms. Muferihat most recently served as Minister of Labor and Skills Development, while Mr. Desta most recently served as Chief Administrator of the Sidama Region.

The leadership elections mark a key institutional step in constituting Ethiopia’s new Parliament as the country proceeds with the formal formation of the new Medemer Government.
