IGAD, AU to Present First Official Observer Assessment of Ethiopia’s 7th General Election on June 3

Addis Ababa, June 2, 2026 (FMC) — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union (AU) are set to present the first official observer assessment of Ethiopia’s 7th General Election during a joint press conference scheduled for June 3, 2026.

The announcement came as the IGAD Election Observation Mission to Ethiopia continued its post-election engagements, including consultations with the ambassadors of Denmark and the United States on the electoral process and the broader political environment.

According to information shared by the mission, discussions focused on voter turnout and the overall conduct of polling during the nationwide vote, which concluded after extended voting hours on Monday.

The mission also provided updates on the deployment of its observers across different parts of the country, noting that deployment decisions have been guided by security assessments and logistical considerations throughout the observation period.

The upcoming joint briefing is expected to provide the first consolidated assessment from regional and continental observer missions following Ethiopia’s nationwide election.

The IGAD Election Observation Mission is led by former Vice President of Uganda, Specioza Wandira Kazibwe, while the African Union Election Observation Mission is headed by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Both missions have been monitoring different aspects of the electoral process, including preparations, polling-day activities, voter participation, and the overall electoral environment.

IGAD said a comprehensive final report will be submitted following the official announcement of the election results.

The forthcoming assessment comes after domestic and international observers, political parties, and electoral stakeholders reported generally peaceful voting conditions in many areas, while continuing to monitor the final stages of the electoral process and the post-election period.
