Meeting Ethiopia’s Expectations Will Be Our Main Focus Over the Next Five Years – Finance Minister Fitsum Assefa
Addis Ababa, October 8, 2026 (FMC) — Meeting Ethiopia’s expectations and delivering on the mandate entrusted by the Ethiopian people will be the government’s main focus over the next five years said the new Minister of Finance Fitsum Assefa (PhD).
The House of Peoples’ Representatives held the first regular session of its seventh parliamentary term today, during which Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) presented members of the Medemer Government’s Council of Ministers, whose appointments were subsequently approved by the House.
Speaking exclusively to Fana Media Corporation after taking constitutional oath as the country’s new Finance Minister, Fitsum said Ethiopia must build on the progress made so far and strengthen efforts over the next five years to transform the country’s vast potential into tangible value and prosperity.
She noted that the Medemer Grand Strategy will guide the government’s priorities by focusing on the aspirations of citizens, identifying key areas of intervention and ensuring that development brings meaningful improvements to people’s lives.
Fitsum stated that the strategy outlines broad national directions, which ministries and institutions will translate into detailed plans and concrete actions.
She highlighted service delivery reform, modernization and digitalization as key priorities, alongside efforts to increase production and productivity and unlock the full value of Ethiopia’s mineral resources.
The minister also emphasized that extensive work would be carried out in the social sectors including in health and education.
Describing the coming five years as a decisive period for the country, Fitsum said the government would prepare itself to effectively deliver on the expectations of Ethiopia and fulfill the trust placed in it by the Ethiopian people.
