National Dialogue Conference participants express optimism over progress toward national consensus

Addis Ababa, August 5, 2026 (FMC) — Participants in Ethiopia’s historic National Dialogue Conference say the ongoing deliberations are fostering hope for the country’s future by creating an inclusive and transparent platform where diverse voices are heard and common ground is being built on key national issues.

The ongoing conference, Ethiopia’s first-ever National Dialogue Conference, has been underway in Addis Ababa since July 15, bringing together around 4,000 delegates representing Ethiopians at home and abroad to deliberate on eight priority national agenda items identified through an extensive nationwide consultation process.

Participants told local media that the conference has enabled delegates with differing perspectives to openly exchange views, listen to one another and engage in constructive discussions aimed at forging shared understanding on issues of national importance.

They noted that for many years, conflict, confrontation and the use of force had often dominated attempts to address Ethiopia’s national questions. In contrast, they described dialogue as a more effective and sustainable path toward resolving differences and strengthening national cohesion.

The delegates also stressed that the conference presents a historic opportunity and a shared responsibility to nurture a culture of nation-building anchored in the power of ideas, reasoned debate and mutual respect rather than division.

According to the participants, the dialogue is laying the foundation for an Ethiopia where consensus on fundamental national issues is built through discussion, providing future generations with a stronger tradition of peaceful engagement and collective problem-solving.

They further expressed confidence that the progress being registered through the conference will help open a new chapter for the country by cultivating hope, reinforcing national unity and contributing to lasting solutions to longstanding challenges.

The participants underscored that the National Dialogue Conference is expected to play an indispensable role in building consensus on fundamental national issues through dialogue, creating a stronger basis for sustainable peace and national reconciliation.
