Nigerian Military Delegation Impressed by Ethiopia’s AI-Powered Smart Border Surveillance
Addis Ababa, October 15, 2026 (FMC) — A Nigerian military delegation has praised Ethiopia’s artificial intelligence-powered border surveillance system, describing it as impressive during a visit to the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute.
The delegation, comprising members of the Nigerian Armed Forces Command and Staff College, visited the institute to learn about its work in developing artificial intelligence technologies and their application to national security, law enforcement and public services.
Institute officials briefed the visitors on its vision of becoming a leading center for artificial intelligence development in Africa. The delegation expressed admiration for the institute’s work, particularly its smart border surveillance system developed for the Ethiopian Customs Commission.
The Nigerian military officers noted that the system could make a significant contribution to monitoring import and export trade, strengthening border oversight and improving the effectiveness of customs operations.
The delegation also learned about the institute’s work on smart cities and smart police stations designed to support crime prevention. Drawing on these experiences, its members stressed the importance of African countries modernizing their security and crime-prevention systems through technology.
Institute officials reaffirmed their commitment to working beyond Ethiopia’s borders, partnering with other African countries to help safeguard the continent’s digital sovereignty and advance homegrown artificial intelligence capabilities.
The visit also included discussions on areas for potential future cooperation, reflecting growing opportunities for Ethiopia and Nigeria to exchange expertise and collaborate on technology-driven security solutions.
