PM Abiy Arrives in Qatar to Pay Respects Following Passing of Father Emir Sheikh Hamad
Addis Ababa, July 13, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in Qatar today to pay his respects following the passing of former Amir and Father Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
The visit reflects the longstanding friendship and strong relations between Ethiopia and Qatar, while honoring the legacy of Sheikh Hamad, who made significant contributions to regional and global affairs, the Office of the Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Abiy’s visit comes a day after he extended his condolences to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the government, and the people of Qatar over the passing of the Father Emir.
In his condolence message, the Prime Minister described Sheikh Hamad as a wise leader who dedicated his efforts to promoting peace, dialogue, and negotiation, including contributing to conflict resolution efforts, particularly in the Horn of Africa.
Prime Minister Abiy also highlighted the late Father Emir’s special attention to Ethiopia-Qatar relations, noting his contribution to building a strategic partnership between the two countries.
He recalled that Sheikh Hamad emphasized the historical ties between Ethiopia and the Muslim world, including the significance of Abyssinia in Islamic history, as well as the longstanding human and historical connections between the two peoples.
The Prime Minister further noted that Sheikh Hamad’s official visit to Ethiopia in April 2013 marked an important milestone in bilateral relations, helping lay the foundation for expanded cooperation between Ethiopia and Qatar.
He also recalled that the visit of Qatar’s current Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to Ethiopia in April 2017 continued the path of strengthening bilateral cooperation.
Prime Minister Abiy expressed confidence that the historic and fraternal relations between Ethiopia and Qatar will continue to grow under the leadership of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
He conveyed his condolences to the Qatari leadership and people, wishing peace for the late Father Emir and strength and comfort to his family and the people of Qatar during this period of mourning.
