PM Abiy: Ethiopia Has No Losing Children, Only Winners
Addis Ababa, October 5, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has stressed national unity, collective responsibility and forward-looking leadership as he delivered his inaugural remarks following his re-election and swearing-in for a second five-year term.
The remarks came during today’s landmark inaugural proceedings of Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives and House of Federation, which formally opened the 7th parliamentary term. The House of Peoples’ Representatives re-elected Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister, after which he took the constitutional oath of office before Parliament for the new term.
Addressing the proceedings, Prime Minister Abiy described Ethiopia’s recent general election as an event tested and refined “like gold through fire,” saying that despite the numerous challenges encountered, the electoral process ultimately strengthened the country’s democratic culture.
He noted that winning and losing political parties are natural outcomes of democratic competition, but emphasized that the nation itself has no losers.
“Ethiopia has no losing children, only winners,” the Prime Minister said, stressing that the country’s shared interests must transcend the outcome of political contests.
Prime Minister Abiy said Ethiopia can overcome its national obstacles only when its people move forward together, “hand-in-hand as brothers,” underscoring unity and collective effort as essential to confronting the country’s challenges.
He further highlighted the rapid and unpredictable changes unfolding across the world, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and preparedness in navigating the future.
The Prime Minister stressed that choosing and pursuing what is best for Ethiopia remains the solemn responsibility of the present generation, as the country begins a new five-year governmental term.
