PM Abiy Inaugurates Negele Borena Geda Airport as Ethiopian Airlines Launches New Domestic Route

Addis Ababa, May 27, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today officially inaugurated the Negele Borena Geda Airport, marking the launch of Ethiopian Airlines’ 24th domestic destination.

In a post shared on his social media pages, the Prime Minister noted that the newly inaugurated airport has been built to accommodate advanced aircraft, including the Boeing 737 Max, and will begin operations with three weekly flights.

PM Abiy said the new air transport connection is expected to help boost local commerce, cross-border trade, and tourism in the area.

He noted that expanding airport infrastructure plays a key role in connecting communities, narrowing development gaps, and unlocking regional economic potential.

The Prime Minister also hailed Ethiopian Airlines, which is marking its 80th anniversary this year, describing the national carrier as the “New Spirit of Africa.”
