PM Abiy says import-substitution & export-oriented manufacturing crucial to Ethiopia’s economic growth
Addis Ababa, May 16, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today inaugurated the Gelan Gura Industrial Park in Addis Ababa, describing the facility as a major contribution to the country’s industrial development, job creation, and economic growth efforts.
Constructed on 43 hectares of land, the newly inaugurated industrial park is expected to provide a conducive business environment for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) while creating employment opportunities for thousands of young people.
In a social media post shared following the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Abiy said the industrial park represents a significant milestone in Ethiopia’s journey toward prosperity and economic transformation.
He noted that the facility would enable manufacturers to expand capacity, improve productivity, and enhance competitiveness, helping them make a stronger contribution at city, national, and regional levels.
The Prime Minister further stated that the industrial park would support the production of import-substituting goods and strengthen commercial linkages between producers and consumers.
According to PM Abiy, supplying products to international markets through the industrial park will also contribute to conserving and increasing Ethiopia’s foreign currency earnings.
