PM’s Adviser Calls for Strategic Vigilance as Regional Alliances Reshape Horn of Africa

Addis Ababa, October 22, 2026 (FMC) — Ministerial Adviser to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia on Eastern African Affairs Getachew Reda has emphasized the need for stronger institutional coordination and sustained strategic responses to protect Ethiopia’s national interests amid shifting geopolitical alignments and emerging security challenges in the Horn of Africa.

He made the remarks during a high-level policy dialogue jointly organized by the Ethiopian National Defence College (ENDC) and the Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA) under the theme, “Unity or Betrayal? Where Is the Anti-Ethiopia Coalition Headed?”

Speaking on a panel titled “The Current Insurgent Alliance, Forces Behind It, and Ethiopia’s Strategic Response,” Getachew examined the evolving alliances, political calculations, and geopolitical interests shaping the region’s security environment.

He highlighted the fragile nature of alliances built on short-term political interests, underscoring the importance of strategic foresight, institutional cooperation, and durable policy responses to address emerging regional challenges.

The dialogue provided a platform to examine the implications of shifting regional alignments for Ethiopia’s national security and explore strategic approaches to safeguarding the country’s interests while advancing peace and stability across the Horn of Africa.
