Ethiopia and Thailand Sign MoUs to Institutionalize Political Consultations and Boost Business Cooperation

Addis Ababa, August 28, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia and Thailand have signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to institutionalize political consultations and strengthen cooperation between the business communities of the two countries.

The agreements were signed following discussions between Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos and Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, in Addis Ababa today.

One of the MoUs establishes a political consultation mechanism between the two countries, providing an institutional framework for regular consultations and further strengthening bilateral political and diplomatic cooperation.

The second MoU aims to enhance cooperation between the respective Chambers of Commerce, creating a platform for stronger business-to-business linkages and expanded economic engagement.

During their discussions, the ministers focused on further strengthening the longstanding friendship between Ethiopia and Thailand and enhancing political and diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.

They exchanged views on a wide range of areas, including trade and investment, air transport connectivity, people-to-people relations, capacity building, technical cooperation, climate change and efforts to combat human trafficking.

The ministers emphasized the importance of strengthening linkages between the business communities of Ethiopia and Thailand and exploring new avenues for economic partnership.

The signing of the MoUs marks an important step toward translating the growing partnership between the two countries into institutionalized political engagement and tangible areas of cooperation.

Sihasak is in Ethiopia as part of his official visit to Africa from August 25 to 29, which also includes Nigeria.
