Deputy PM Temesgen calls for African unity against cross-border crimes
Addis Ababa, August 29, 2025 (FMC) – Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Mr. Temesgen Truneh, has called on African nations to unite in the fight against cross-border crimes that threaten the continent’s sovereignty, wealth, and future.
Speaking at the opening of the 25th Council of Ministers Meeting of the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG) in Addis Ababa, Temesgen expressed Ethiopia’s pride in hosting the gathering in its capital.
He warned that Africa is facing rapidly evolving threats, including illicit financial flows, money laundering, and terrorist financing. “These crimes rob our citizens of opportunity, block our continental aspirations, and slow our progress. And because they cross borders, no nation can defeat them alone,” he stressed.
Highlighting Ethiopia’s response, the Deputy Prime Minister said a national committee has been established to confront these challenges. “We will keep strengthening our efforts—working with our people, with fellow nations, and with partners—to protect our future and secure Africa’s progress,” he affirmed.
The meeting has brought together ministers from 21 countries, including the Vice President and Minister of Finance of Botswana, alongside key stakeholders from major international and continental institutions.
