Ethiopia Graduates First-Ever Coast Guard Police, Strengthening Security and Safeguarding the GERD

Addis Ababa, August 29, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia has for the first time in its history graduated a Coast Guard Police force, in a landmark ceremony held by the Ethiopian Federal Police in collaboration with Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics.

Ethiopian Federal Police Commissioner General Demelash Gebre-Michael hailed the graduation as a turning point in the institution’s 116-year history, underscoring that the creation of a modern Coast Guard Police demonstrates the Federal Police’s ongoing reform and commitment to international standards.

He said the establishment of this specialized force represents a proud new chapter for both the country and the police institution.

Commissioner General Demelash highlighted the crucial role of Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics in ensuring national security, recalling its successful coordination with security institutions during the transport of heavy machinery for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

He emphasized that the Ethiopia Federal Police has safeguarded the GERD throughout its 14-year construction, with officers making sacrifices in defense of the project, a legacy he likened to the historic victory of Adwa.

For his part, Beriso Amelo, CEO of Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics, affirmed that the new Coast Guard Police officers have received comprehensive training to maintain maritime peace and coastal security.

He stressed that their deployment will strengthen Ethiopia’s capacity to meet the growing demands of maritime trade and ensure the safe passage of goods.

Beriso also expressed pride in supporting the nation’s first Coast Guard Police training program, pledging continued backing through training, financial, and material resources to build a strong and reliable maritime security force.
