GERD overcomes hardships, brings economic and regional benefits

Addis Ababa, September 1, 2025 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) said that while constructing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) was arduous, its fruits promise substantial economic benefits for Ethiopia and the region.

Speaking at the GERD site, the Prime Minister recalled that the construction process was challenging, tiring, and controversial.

Ethiopia faced international pressure, including repeated warnings from global bodies such as the UN Security Council, as well as resource constraints that delayed the project.

“Despite these pressures, we persevered, and the dam now stands as a source of light and prosperity,” PM Abiy said.

He explained that the project safeguards Ethiopia’s natural resources, including soil and minerals, which were previously lost to the Abbay River’s flow. The dam also ensures uninterrupted water supply downstream, dispelling misconceptions that Ethiopia’s utilization of the river harms neighboring countries.

The Prime Minister highlighted that GERD will generate nearly $1 billion annually and provide vast energy resources, which can illuminate the country and surrounding regions.

“The construction process was challenging, but the reward is immense for Ethiopia and the Nile basin,” he said.

PM Abiy also recalled that the dam symbolizes hope for millions who have historically endured poverty, emphasizing that the project has turned decades of frustration into tangible progress.
