GERD Triumph Underscores Ethiopia’s Power of Unity and Self-Financing: Amhara Chief Administrator

Addis Ababa, September 16, 2025 (FMC) – Public rallies were staged across the Amhara region today as residents celebrated the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a project widely hailed as a historic symbol of Ethiopia’s unity and self-reliance.

The GERD, inaugurated on 9 September 2025 in the presence of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and several African leaders, is entirely financed by Ethiopians through collective public contributions and government support—marking an unprecedented national achievement.

Speaking at the rally held in Bahir Dar city, Amhara Region Chief Administrator Arega Kebed emphasized that the completion of GERD through domestic resources demonstrates Ethiopia’s capability to undertake transformative mega projects through national solidarity. “The successful realization of GERD with local finance is proof that our nation can accomplish extraordinary undertakings with unity and determination,” he said.

Acting Deputy Mayor of Bahir Dar, Goshu Endaamaw, described GERD as a milestone in Ethiopia’s long journey toward prosperity. He noted that the dam represents not only the country’s resurgence but also the end of centuries of frustration in harnessing its own natural resources. “GERD signifies Ethiopia’s inevitable march toward prosperity,” he underscored.

Since the inauguration, Ethiopians across the nation have been celebrating the dam’s completion through mass rallies, reflecting pride in being both the architects and financiers of Africa’s largest hydroelectric power project.

Built on the Abay River in Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State, GERD stands as a monumental expression of Ethiopia’s collective determination, resilience, and vision for a brighter future.
