Afar Region Joins National Celebrations of Ethiopia’s People-Powered GERD

Addis Ababa, September 21, 2025 (FMC) – The Afar Region today formally marked its celebration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a landmark project entirely funded by Ethiopian citizens and hailed as a symbol of national unity and prosperity.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially inaugurated the GERD on September 9 in the presence of African and Caribbean leaders, underscoring its continental and global significance.

Unlike many large-scale projects in Africa that rely on external loans, the GERD stands out as a self-funded achievement of the Ethiopian people.

Today’s rally in Semera follows a fortnight of nationwide festivities, with each region dedicating a day to commemorate the completion of the dam.

Similar events, including a mass sports gathering in Harar city of the Harari Region, have been held across the country.

Participants at the Afar rally emphasized that the GERD represents Ethiopia’s resilience and prosperity while serving as a unifying foundation for its citizens.

They also pledged that the determination and spirit that made the dam possible will inspire success in other critical national development initiatives.
