Addis Ababa, November 12, 2025 (FMC) – The African Union and the United Nations have agreed on concrete frameworks to jointly monitor and implement development initiatives across Africa, underscoring a shared commitment to accelerating sustainable growth on the continent.

The announcement came at the Fifth AU-UN High Level Strategic Dialogue on Sustainable Development, held on November 10 at UN headquarters. The dialogue brought together African Union Commissioners and UN representatives, providing a platform to address Africa’s unique development challenges while strengthening collaboration between the two organizations.

African Union Commission Deputy Chairperson Selma Malika Haddadi highlighted ongoing cooperation between UN agencies and AU departments on democratic governance, trade policy, food security, and institutional capacity building. She emphasized the importance of institutional reforms and regular review processes to track progress on development initiatives.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed encouraged sharing best practices, scaling successful programs across regions, and involving marginalized groups, particularly women and youth, in decision-making and development processes.

The dialogue focused on harmonizing Africa’s Agenda 2063 with the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, peace and security, governance, youth and women’s leadership, education and skills development, infrastructure, climate resilience, innovative financing, technology, and environmental sustainability.

By the end of the dialogue, both organizations agreed on specific frameworks for joint monitoring, implementation, and capacity-building initiatives, signaling a new phase of strategic cooperation aimed at translating policy commitments into tangible outcomes across Africa.
