DR Congo Fan Honors Patrice Lumumba at AFCON Matches
Addis Ababa, December 31, 2025 — A supporter of the Democratic Republic of Congo has drawn widespread attention at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by paying tribute to the country’s late independence leader, Patrice Lumumba, through a striking and silent presence in the stands.
According to Reuters, the fan, identified as Michel Kuka Mboladinga, stood motionless throughout DR Congo’s group-stage matches, positioning himself atop a small platform while dressed in a jacket and tie reminiscent of Lumumba’s iconic appearance.
He raised one arm in a pose associated with the late leader’s memorial in Kinshasa.
The tribute was most notable during DR Congo’s 3–0 victory over Botswana, a result that secured the team’s place in the tournament’s last 16. Mboladinga remained still for the entirety of the match, becoming an unexpected focal point among cheering supporters.
Fellow fans have nicknamed him “Lumumba” due to his resemblance to the former prime minister, who played a central role in Congo’s independence before his assassination in 1961.
Mboladinga has repeated the gesture at each of DR Congo’s group games, including the opening match against Benin, which extended beyond regular time.
With DR Congo advancing to the knockout stage, the supporter said he intends to continue his symbolic vigil when the team faces Algeria in the next round, maintaining the tribute as long as the campaign continues.
