Revitalized Rivers Mark Transformative Success in Addis Ababa – Mayor
Addis Ababa, January 10, 2026 (FMC) – The restoration of Addis Ababa’s Kebena and Ginfle rivers represents more than infrastructure development—it is a generational achievement, Mayor Ms. Adanech Abiebie said.
On Friday, the Mayor reviewed the progress of riverside development projects that are transforming previously degraded riverbanks into green, vibrant spaces for the city’s residents.
“Turning polluted sites into green paradises, with modern walkways, sports facilities, and clean water channels, is our commitment to a sustainable and healthy environment for all,” the Mayor said. She emphasized that seeing rivers that had lost their natural resources being treated and restored is a remarkable success.
The 19-kilometer Kebena project, stretching from Entoto to Karamara Bridge, is nearing completion. Dried water sources have been revived, and the riverbanks are now lined with indigenous trees, providing cleaner air and a healthier environment for the community.
Mayor Adanech highlighted that the projects include water dams, bridges, modern pedestrian and bicycle paths, and sports facilities, all designed to ensure sustainable urban development. “Green and beautification works will transform the appearance of our city, making it more comfortable for residents and a pride for our nation,” she added.
The Mayor also noted that the development has created a promising environment for real estate and hotel investments, urging knowledgeable investors to actively engage in this unique opportunity.
She also expressed gratitude to leaders, professionals, enterprises, and local residents contributing to the successful realization of these transformative projects.
