Green Legacy initiative transforming Ethiopian cities through urban greening – PMO
Addis Ababa, January 23, 2026 (FMC) — Cities across Ethiopia are witnessing a marked transformation as the Green Legacy Initiative continues to expand urban green spaces, the Office of the Prime Minister has claimed.
Through extensive tree-planting campaigns and the rehabilitation of public parks, the initiative is turning once concrete-dominated urban areas into greener, more livable environments.
In a social media post, the Office noted that the expanding network of green spaces is playing a vital role in environmental protection and biodiversity conservation, while also contributing to healthier and more resilient cities. Urban greening efforts are helping to mitigate climate impacts, improve air quality, and enhance ecological balance.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the initiative is also creating inclusive spaces for recreation, social interaction, and outdoor activities. These developments are strengthening community bonds and significantly improving the quality of life for urban residents.
The Office of the Prime Minister added that the Green Legacy Initiative underscores the government’s commitment to sustainable, people-centred urban development by integrating environmental stewardship with social well-being and long-term urban resilience.
