Ethiopia harvests 999 million quintals of crops in first six months, achieving 78% of annual target – PM Abiy Ahmed
Addis Ababa, February 3, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) reported today that Ethiopia has harvested 999 million quintals of crops during the first six months of the 2025/26 fiscal year, accounting for 78 percent of the annual production target.
Addressing lawmakers during the 10th regular session of the Ethiopian Parliament, PM Abiy noted that cereals, horticulture, and cotton production alone have reached 79 percent of their planned targets, reflecting strong momentum toward surpassing the yearly goals.
The Prime Minister attributed the sector’s growth to a combination of household and cluster farming initiatives, mechanized agriculture, and the transformation of previously unarable land into productive farmland. Efforts to boost wheat and other crop yields, together with the launch of large-scale fertilizer production plants, have also contributed to the strong performance.
PM Abiy highlighted the expansion of farm mechanization, noting that over 27,000 tractors are now in operation nationwide, a significant increase compared to a decade ago. He urged all stakeholders to continue collaborative efforts to sustain productivity and build on the achievements in the second half of the fiscal year.
The Prime Minister also emphasized Ethiopia’s coffee sector, noting that exports have exceeded $2.5 billion, further underlining the agricultural sector’s role as a major driver of national economic growth.
