Sixth Nationwide Grand Street Iftar Brings Ramadan Gatherings to Cities Across Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, March 7, 2026 (FMC) – The sixth annual nationwide Grand Street Iftar was observed across several major cities in Ethiopia on Saturday, bringing together thousands of Muslims to collectively break their fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

In the capital, large numbers of participants gathered at Meskel Square, where the communal event drew prominent religious leaders and dignitaries. Among those present were the President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, Haji Sheikh Ibrahim Tufa, and the Head of the President’s Office at the Council, Ustaz Abubeker Ahmed, along with other respected Islamic scholars and community figures.

Organized by the Supreme Council in collaboration with the Ethiopian Muslim Youth Council, the gathering was held under the theme “Nejashi for the Country.”

The theme draws inspiration from Ethiopia’s historic legacy of tolerance and the story of Ashama ibn Abjar, the Axumite ruler widely honored in Islamic history for granting refuge to early Muslims who sought protection in the ancient Kingdom of Aksum.

Held simultaneously in multiple cities and communities, the event highlighted both the spiritual and social significance of Ramadan while fostering solidarity among citizens.

Observed by Muslims around the world, Ramadan is a time of reflection, charity, and spiritual renewal. Organizers say the Grand Street Iftar has increasingly become a platform for collective prayer, community engagement, and a renewed call for national unity, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect among Ethiopia’s diverse communities.
