PM Abiy Salutes Ethiopia’s Fallen Heroes, Underscores Defense Manufacturing as a Pillar of Self-Reliance

Addis Ababa, September 8, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has paid tribute to Ethiopia’s fallen heroes and security forces while underscoring the growing role of domestic defense manufacturing in strengthening the country’s self-reliance and national resilience.

The Prime Minister made the remarks in a message marking Pagume 3, observed as the Day of Resilience, the third of five themed days being observed under the overarching theme “Ethiopia’s Renewal” as the country concludes the 2018 Ethiopian calendar year.

Prime Minister Abiy said Ethiopia’s pursuit of national strength and progress cannot be separated from the dedication of its security forces, who continue to safeguard the country against threats and protect its sovereignty.

He commemorated with the highest national honor the historic sacrifices of heroes who gave their lives for the continuity and sovereignty of the Ethiopian state.

The Prime Minister also pointed to the growing capacity of Ethiopia’s defense industries, saying the country is increasingly drawing on the knowledge and capabilities of its citizens to manufacture advanced defense technologies domestically.

He cited unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), modern armored military vehicles, heavy weapons and artillery, as well as ammunition among the defense equipment now being produced through the country’s own industries.

According to Prime Minister Abiy, strengthening domestic defense manufacturing forms an important pillar of strategic self-reliance, reinforcing national resilience while contributing to the conditions needed for peace and broader economic development.

He said Ethiopia’s pursuit of sustainable prosperity would be strengthened by combining tangible development with resilient national institutions and the capability to safeguard the country’s sovereignty.

The Day of Resilience connects remembrance of Ethiopia’s fallen heroes and recognition of those safeguarding the nation today with a broader reflection on the country’s resilience, self-reliance and aspirations for sustainable prosperity.
