Stakeholders Stress Women’s Role in Advancing Agroecology, Food Systems

Addis Ababa, March 8, 2026 (FMC) — Stakeholders have emphasized the important role women play in advancing agroecology and sustainable food systems during an event organized by the Ethiopian Sustainable Food Systems and Agroecology Consortium (ESFSAC) in connection with this year’s International Women’s Day.

The program, held on March 7, brought together members of the Women in Agroecology and Food Systems Network, parliamentarians, academics and representatives of various institutions to discuss women’s contributions and leadership in the sector.

Participants noted that women play key roles across food systems—from seed preservation and agricultural production to food processing, marketing and the transmission of indigenous knowledge.

They also highlighted the need to further strengthen women’s participation in leadership and decision-making processes related to agroecology and food systems.

Representatives from institutions including Kotebe University of Education, Addis Ababa University and ActionAid Ethiopia took part in the discussions.

The event featured keynote remarks and experience-sharing sessions aimed at recognizing the contributions of women working in agroecology while drawing attention to existing challenges and opportunities in the sector.

The Ethiopian Sustainable Food Systems and Agroecology Consortium is a network of organizations working to promote sustainable agriculture, indigenous food systems and community-led agroecological practices in Ethiopia.
