Deputy PM Says Transformative Projects Position Bahir Dar as Emerging Urban, Tourism Hub

Addis Ababa, March 22, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh says ongoing large-scale infrastructure and investment projects are rapidly positioning Bahir Dar as a model of modern urban development and a growing center for tourism and economic activity.

The Deputy Prime Minister indicated that a series of transformative developments underway in the city are significantly enhancing connectivity, urban mobility, and investment potential, with multiple projects advancing at an accelerated pace.

Earlier today, Deputy PM Temesgen traveled to Bahir Dar earlier today, where he toured key infrastructure and development sites across the city.

Among the major projects, urban corridor and road infrastructure developments are progressing steadily, improving both the city’s landscape and traffic flow. The corridor linking the old Blue Nile Bridge to Gabriel Church is advancing notably, while the asphalt road connecting Gabriel to Midre Genet has been completed. A new access road from Hani Garden to Wereb has also been finalized and connected to the new Blue Nile Bridge, now fully operational.

The Deputy Prime Minister also visited major investments by Ethiopian Airlines, including the Bahir Dar Pilot Training Academy, which is nearing completion. The facility includes modern training classrooms, residential accommodations for trainees and instructors, sports facilities, and landscaped green spaces.

In addition, the expansion of Dejazmach Belay Zeleke International Airport is in its final phase, with the new terminal expected to handle up to 1,000 passengers per hour upon completion. The project is set to significantly enhance the city’s aviation capacity and connectivity.

The developments are expected to play a key role in boosting tourism, facilitating trade, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening Bahir Dar’s position as a strategic economic hub.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the ongoing projects collectively signal a new phase in the city’s growth, reinforcing its trajectory toward becoming a more connected, vibrant, and economically dynamic urban center.
