Ethiopia and Afreximbank Discuss African Self-Reliance, Economic Cooperation
Addis Ababa, April 12, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance Ahmed Shide and Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia Eyob Tekalign held talks with African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) President George Elombi on Africa’s near- to long-term program for economic self-reliance, coordinated responses to the current global crisis, and areas of enhanced cooperation.
The discussions focused on strengthening Africa’s economic resilience through deeper regional integration, expanded intra-African trade, and greater mobilization of African financial resources.
The officials also exchanged views on Africa’s collective response to global economic challenges, including supply chain disruptions, highlighting the need for coordinated continental initiatives to stabilize essential commodity supply and safeguard macroeconomic stability.
Key areas of cooperation identified include industrialization, infrastructure financing, and financial sector collaboration with the National Bank of Ethiopia, including regional payment and settlement systems.
Both sides agreed to continue close collaboration to advance priority initiatives and support Africa’s vision for greater self-reliance and resilience.
