National Dialogue Opens Historic Path Toward Shared Future for Ethiopia: NDC Chief Commissioner
Addis Ababa, July 15, 2026 (FMC) — Chief Commissioner of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission Professor Mesfin Araya said the National Dialogue Conference marks a historic milestone for Ethiopia, providing an opportunity to build a strong and secure nation for the next generation through inclusive consultation and consensus-building.
Speaking at the opening of the conference in Addis Ababa in the presence of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Professor Mesfin said Ethiopia has reached this historic moment together with its people, describing the forum as a great national undertaking that will open a new chapter in the country’s history.
He said the conference will help shape Ethiopia’s political and social journey by creating a platform where citizens can engage on fundamental national questions, listen to one another and build consensus on the country’s shared future.
Professor Mesfin noted that Ethiopia’s long history, diverse cultures and social richness are sources of strength, while acknowledging that accumulated differences and disagreements have created challenges to sustaining national unity and peace.
He explained that longstanding political and systemic issues have continued to test the country’s stability, but stressed that differences of opinion are not problems in themselves, as diverse perspectives are part of democratic life.
The Chief Commissioner said challenges emerge when differences are addressed through conflict, isolation, hatred or force instead of consultation and dialogue. He emphasized that lasting solutions to Ethiopia’s social and political challenges cannot be achieved through conflict or temporary measures, but through a credible, transparent and inclusive national dialogue.
He said the conference serves as a platform for national healing, allowing Ethiopians to listen to each other, understand shared experiences, overcome historical scars and build agreement on a common future.
Professor Mesfin stated that the Commission has undertaken extensive preparations since its establishment, including agenda-building activities at different levels and public awareness efforts, which have contributed to bringing the country to this historic conference.
He said the outcomes of the dialogue will have a significant impact on Ethiopia’s future, expressing hope that the process will contribute to lasting peace and stability by developing common solutions and strengthening a culture of dialogue and consultation.
The Chief Commissioner called on participants to rise above narrow interests and engage in sincere and honest deliberations guided by national peace, unity and the future of generations to come.
