African Union Describes Ethiopia’s Stability as Strategic to the Horn of Africa and the Continent

Addis Ababa, July 17, 2026 (FMC) — The African Union (AU) has described Ethiopia’s peace, stability and unity as strategically important not only to its own people but also to the Horn of Africa and the wider continent, reaffirming the continental body’s enduring commitment to supporting the country’s pursuit of lasting peace and development.

Speaking at the opening of Ethiopia’s historic National Dialogue Conference in Addis Ababa recently, African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Bankole Adeoye said Ethiopia’s stability carries significance far beyond its national borders because of the country’s central role in regional and continental affairs.

Adeoye delivered the remarks on behalf of African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, conveying the Chairperson’s warm greetings to the Ethiopian government and people while reaffirming the continental body’s continued solidarity with Ethiopia at what he described as a historic moment for the country.

“We consider, as the African Union, Ethiopia’s peace, stability and unity as very strategic—not just for the people of Ethiopia, but for the entire region and, of course, our continent,” Adeoye said.

He noted that the African Union has been hosted by Ethiopia for more than six decades, describing the organization as proud of its longstanding partnership with the Ethiopian people.

“We are here as the African Union, hosted for over 63 years by the good people of Ethiopia. We are proud to be associated,” he said.

Adeoye reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to standing alongside Ethiopia in advancing peace, national reconciliation, constitutional governance and sustainable development in line with the aspirations of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

“We will continue to stand with you as the African Union to promote peace, national reconciliation, constitutional governance, sustainable development for the aspirations of all Ethiopians and, of course, in line with the aspirations of Agenda 2063,” he said.

The Commissioner said the AU would continue supporting the principles of mutual respect, inclusion and credibility, underscoring the importance of democracy and inclusive governance as Ethiopia advances its national priorities.

He also congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Prosperity Party on their decisive victory in Ethiopia’s seventh general election.

Concluding his remarks, Adeoye reaffirmed the African Union’s enduring commitment to Ethiopia and its people.

“From generation to generation, the African Union will stand with the good people of Ethiopia,” he said.
