A New Jewel of African Tourism

Addis Ababa, July 24, 2026 (FMC) — Shabeely Resort has emerged as a new jewel of African tourism, transforming the landscape of Ethiopia’s Somali Region by blending natural beauty, cultural heritage, and modern hospitality services into a unique tourism destination.

Developed under the “Dine for Generations” initiative, the resort has opened a new chapter in Ethiopia’s tourism development, demonstrating how the country’s diverse natural resources and cultural values can be transformed into sustainable economic opportunities and a lasting legacy for future generations.

Built on 385 hectares of land in the Somali Region, Shabeely Resort has turned a challenging natural environment into an attractive tourism destination, showcasing the potential of Ethiopia’s eastern landscape and its rich cultural identity.

The resort, located about 28 kilometers from Jigjiga, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in January 2026 and has since become a major tourism attraction, drawing visitors, leaders from neighboring countries, and international guests.

The project represents a major milestone for the Somali Region and Eastern Africa’s tourism industry, creating a platform where Ethiopia’s natural assets, cultural traditions, and modern tourism infrastructure converge.

With the vision of positioning Ethiopia among Africa’s leading tourism destinations, Shabeely Resort reflects the country’s commitment to developing destinations that promote economic growth, cultural exchange, and social connectivity.

The resort features 51 modern accommodation rooms, three restaurants capable of hosting up to 400 guests at a time, and modern conference facilities, contributing to increased economic activity and creating employment opportunities for the local community.

Designed to reflect the history and cultural values of the Somali people, the resort has given a new identity to the area by incorporating more than 10,000 fruit trees and a camel park, enhancing the natural environment while preserving local heritage.

The 15.4-kilometer pedestrian pathways and cultural centers developed within the resort have created spaces for interaction and connection, strengthening values of peace, coexistence, and social harmony.

Shabeely Resort stands as a testament to Ethiopia’s ability to transform hidden natural and cultural treasures into globally appealing tourism destinations.

Beyond its role as a tourism center, the resort is becoming a symbol of pride, opportunity, and sustainable development — a legacy project designed to benefit communities today while creating value for generations to come.
