Green Addis Ababa to Plant More Than One Million Seedlings in Ethiopia’s Historic One-Day Green Legacy Campaign

Addis Ababa, August 2, 2026 (FMC) — The Addis Ababa City Administration has announced that the capital will plant more than one million tree seedlings as part of Ethiopia’s historic One-Day National Tree Planting Campaign scheduled for August 3 under the Green Legacy Initiative.

The city administration said preparations have been finalized for the nationwide campaign, with planting sites identified, seedlings prepared and necessary arrangements completed to enable residents to actively participate in the environmental movement being conducted under the theme “Let’s Plant Hope.”

The campaign in Addis Ababa is expected to further advance the Green Addis Ababa initiative, which focuses on expanding urban greenery, enhancing public spaces, improving environmental quality and building a more sustainable and climate-resilient capital.

The city administration called on residents to take part in the one-day national campaign, emphasizing that planting trees represents a collective contribution toward protecting the environment and creating a greener future for generations.

The One-Day National Tree Planting Campaign is part of Ethiopia’s wider Green Legacy Initiative, which has mobilized millions of citizens since its launch in 2019 to restore degraded landscapes, increase forest coverage and strengthen climate resilience.

Ethiopia has planted more than 48 billion seedlings since the launch of the initiative. In 2026, the country is targeting the planting of 8.5 billion additional seedlings, including 800 million seedlings during the August 3 one-day campaign, with the aim of reaching around 56 billion planted seedlings since 2019.

The country further aims to reach 65 billion planted seedlings by the end of the 2027 Green Legacy campaign, ahead of hosting COP32, where Ethiopia plans to highlight its climate action and environmental restoration achievements.
