Addis Ababa, August 3, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia today is undertaking one of the world’s largest coordinated environmental actions as millions of citizens across the country join a nationwide campaign to plant 800 million tree seedlings in a single day, turning collective action into a powerful statement of climate responsibility and environmental restoration.

The one-day planting campaign, carried out under the Green_Legacy Initiative (GLI), reflects Ethiopia’s continued commitment to restoring degraded landscapes, strengthening ecosystems and building a resilient green future amid growing global concerns over climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation.

From rural communities and agricultural areas to urban centers, Ethiopians are coming together to contribute to a national effort that seeks to demonstrate how citizen participation and nature-based solutions can create lasting environmental and economic benefits.

The campaign represents another milestone in Ethiopia’s Green Legacy journey, which has transformed tree planting from an environmental activity into a nationwide movement connecting ecological recovery with sustainable development, food security, water protection and climate adaptation.
