PP Vice President Adem Farah: Green Legacy Shows Power of Public Action in Restoring Nature

Addis Ababa, August 3, 2026 (FMC) — The Green Legacy Initiative has demonstrated the power of collective public action in restoring nature, strengthening climate resilience, and advancing Ethiopia’s environmental goals, Vice President of the Prosperity Party (PP) Adem Farah said.

Adem Farah made the remarks after participating in Ethiopia’s nationwide one-day campaign to plant 800 million seedlings, which has brought together millions of citizens, government officials, and political leaders across the country.

He said the Green Legacy Initiative has become a practical demonstration of Ethiopia’s commitment to addressing climate change while restoring degraded ecosystems and improving livelihoods.

The PP Vice President noted that the annual tree-planting campaigns conducted since the launch of the initiative have generated significant environmental, economic, and social benefits, including the expansion of forest coverage, restoration of degraded landscapes, improvement of biodiversity, and strengthening of climate resilience.

He attributed the achievements registered under the initiative to the active participation and collective commitment of the Ethiopian people, emphasizing the role of public engagement in driving the country’s environmental transformation.

Adem said the government is committed to building on the progress achieved through the Green Legacy Initiative by extending the same spirit of collective action and determination across all sectors to accelerate national development and improve citizens’ well-being.

He also stressed the importance of ensuring proper follow-up and care after planting to guarantee the survival of seedlings and achieve the intended objectives of the initiative.

Launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in 2019, the Green Legacy Initiative has become one of Ethiopia’s flagship environmental programs aimed at combating climate change, restoring degraded land, and increasing forest coverage.

Since its launch, Ethiopia has planted more than 48 billion seedlings through the initiative. The country is targeting the planting of an additional 8 billion seedlings during the current planting season as part of its continued environmental restoration efforts.
