BRICS Summit Concludes With New Delhi Declaration to Advance a More Resilient, Inclusive Global Order

Addis Ababa, September 13, 2026 (FMC) — The 18th BRICS Summit concluded in New Delhi with the adoption of the New Delhi Declaration, setting out a shared direction for strengthening cooperation, advancing inclusive development and shaping a more representative and responsive international order.

Held on September 12–13 under India’s chairship and themed “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” the summit brought together leaders of the expanded BRICS grouping at a moment of heightened geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

The New Delhi Declaration reaffirmed the principles of mutual respect and understanding, sovereign equality, solidarity, openness, inclusiveness, collaboration and consensus, while outlining common priorities for the bloc’s future cooperation.

India’s External Affairs Ministry said BRICS leaders reached broad convergence on strengthening multilateralism and reforming global governance institutions to make them more representative, inclusive, effective and responsive to contemporary realities. The Indian side also framed the summit’s discussions around development-oriented outcomes and a stronger voice for the Global South.

The declaration therefore places the expanded grouping’s political and economic weight behind a broader vision of international cooperation, with global governance, development, economic cooperation and other shared challenges forming part of its collective agenda.

Chinese state media likewise described the New Delhi summit as providing guidance for higher-quality cooperation within a “Greater BRICS” framework, while emphasizing the grouping’s continuing effort to translate shared aspirations into collective action.

The conclusion also underscored the importance of implementation. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the New Delhi Declaration should provide a clear direction for the grouping’s shared vision and future cooperation, stressing that summit outcomes must be translated into time-bound actions capable of delivering impact on the ground.

With the New Delhi Declaration adopted, the summit has thus moved BRICS beyond a two-day leaders’ meeting toward a common framework for cooperation—one that its members now face the task of turning into concrete outcomes across the areas identified in the declaration.
