Ethiopia to Install 107 Modern Automated Weather Stations Nationwide

Addis Ababa, November 3, 2026 (FMC) – The Ethiopian Meteorology Institute has finalized preparations to install 107 modern automated weather observation stations across the country, a move expected to strengthen weather forecasting and early warning services.

The announcement was made by the Institute’s Director-General, Fetene Teshome, during the launch of the 2019 Ethiopian Fiscal Year summer-season weather outlook forecast in Mizan Aman town.

Fetene, who also serves as the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) representative for Africa, said the Institute currently provides weather forecasting and disaster early warning services through 11 centres across Ethiopia.

He underscored the importance of reliable meteorological services for countries such as Ethiopia, whose economy is heavily dependent on agriculture, noting that the Institute has been providing the public with short-, medium- and long-range weather forecasts while expanding its services across different sectors.

He said the 107 new automated stations would significantly enhance the Institute’s forecasting capabilities, as they are designed to transmit weather data every 15 minutes, offering substantially improved performance compared with the equipment previously in use.

The Director-General further explained that, since 2021, the Institute has adopted the global climate framework and developed a national climate framework to provide short-, medium- and long-term forecasts and climate information for agriculture, water, health and disaster risk management.

He also noted that the Institute, in collaboration with the Lowlands Livelihood Improvement Project, has been providing communities in Ethiopia’s lowland areas with weather forecasts and information on potential disaster risks to support preparedness and informed decision-making.
