Fana: At a Speed of Life!

Addis Ababa Steps Up Urban Transformation, Housing Delivery and Cost-of-Living Relief Under 90-Day Plan

Addis Ababa, October 12, 2026 (FMC) — The Addis Ababa City Administration has completed a two-day review of its first-quarter performance for the 2019 Ethiopian fiscal year, highlighting progress in housing, urban renewal, transport infrastructure and measures to ease the cost-of-living burden.

Mayor Adanech Abiebie said the administration had implemented key activities under its 90-day plan, including summer voluntary work, the Green Legacy Initiative, housing construction and the upgrading of underserved neighbourhoods.

During the review, the administration assessed its delivery of initiatives intended to improve residents’ living conditions and access to services while laying the groundwork for further development, she said.

Adanech attributed the reported progress to a stronger work ethic, a culture of service and integrity, the application of the Medemer principle to improve the speed and quality of implementation, and the ability to translate plans into action without wasting time.

She added that the Medemer Government was working to foster a new political culture while adapting institutional structures to current demands and strengthening performance-based leadership.

On housing, the mayor said efforts had been made to provide clean, dignified homes for people facing housing shortages and those displaced from their residences by development projects. The administration had also carried out meal-sharing initiatives to ease the financial pressure on low-income residents.

She further noted that the city had continued construction during the rainy season, challenging the long-standing assumption that building projects could not be carried out during that period.

In transport infrastructure, four major parking and terminal facilities had become operational, while new roads, pedestrian and cycling routes, drainage systems and sewer lines had been developed. These interventions were intended to reduce flooding and prevent loss of life, she said.

The administration had also sought to contain seasonal living costs by expanding the supply of goods through seven market centres and improving the operation of weekend markets.

Adanech said people-centred development initiatives had contributed to advancing social justice. She pledged to address differences in performance among institutions and individual employees through stronger support and follow-up.

Emphasizing institutional capacity-building, the mayor said fragmented efforts could not deliver a shared vision or build a nation. She called for clearer individual responsibilities and accountability, alongside coordinated work guided by the Medemer principle.

The administration, she said, would continue prioritizing the public interest, safeguarding citizens’ dignity and pursuing tangible results.
