Belgium Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthen Ethiopia Partnership During 120th Anniversary Celebration in Brussels

Addis Ababa, May 29, 2026 (FMC) — Belgium has reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthening relations with Ethiopia during celebrations marking the 120th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Belgium held in Brussels.

The commemoration was held at the Press Club Brussels Europe on 28 May 2026, jointly organized by the Embassy of Ethiopia in Brussels together with senior officials of the Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs of Belgium.

The event brought together members of the diplomatic community, academics, and friends of Ethiopia and Belgium to mark more than a century of friendship, cooperation, and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

In his opening remarks, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Belgium Eshete Tilahun highlighted the historical links between Ethiopia and Belgium, stressing that relations extend beyond formal diplomacy to include trade, culture, education, and solidarity during critical moments in history.

In a pre-recorded message, Belgian Ambassador to Ethiopia Annelies Verstichel emphasized the enduring partnership between the two nations and the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties.

The Guest of Honor, Chief of Cabinet to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Kingdom of Belgium Hubert Roisin, delivered a keynote address reaffirming commitment to further strengthening Ethio-Belgian relations across various sectors. Senior Belgian officials including Ambassador Marc Pecsteen, Director for Africa, and Ambassador Pierre Cartuyvels, Chief of Protocol, were also present.

The event featured a presentation titled “A Tale of Two Lions” by Mr. Tim Ianna, offering historical reflections on Ethio-Belgian relations, followed by a video montage showcasing landmark royal and state visits that have shaped bilateral ties over the decades.

Guests also attended the official opening of the commemorative photo exhibition titled “Images of Friendship: 120,” highlighting key diplomatic moments, official visits, and expanding cooperation between Ethiopia and Belgium across generations.

The commemoration also marks the launch of a year-long series of activities, including cultural showcases and Ethiopian culinary presentations, Ethiopian Embassy in Brussels told Fana Media Corporation.
