Denmark Confirm Midfielder Christian Eriksen Stable After On-Pitch Incident Against Ukraine

Addis Ababa, June 7, 2026 (FMC) — Denmark have confirmed that midfielder Christian Eriksen is stable after a medical incident during an international friendly against Ukraine national football team on Sunday, in a match that was later abandoned in Odense, Reuters reported.

The incident occurred in the 65th minute when Eriksen suddenly went down on the pitch after appearing to clutch his chest. Medical staff immediately entered the field as players from both sides formed a protective circle around him while treatment was administered. The match was subsequently halted and not resumed, with Denmark leading 2–1 at the time.

According to Reuters, the Danish Football Association said Eriksen regained consciousness quickly and was able to leave the pitch with assistance. The statement added that he was “doing well under the circumstances” and remained under medical observation for further assessment.

Team doctor Morten Boesen said Eriksen briefly lost consciousness but recovered quickly, adding that his implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), fitted after his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, appeared to function correctly during the incident. Further medical tests are being carried out to determine the cause.

The Associated Press (AP) reported that Eriksen later communicated from his medical observation, reassuring teammates that he was feeling well while undergoing routine checks.

The incident revived global concern due to its similarity to Eriksen’s collapse during the 2021 European Championship, when he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch before being successfully resuscitated and later returning to professional football.

Both Denmark and Ukraine players jointly agreed for the match to be abandoned following the medical situation.
