Deputy PM highlights integrated watershed development driving agricultural transformation in Oromia region

Addis Ababa, May 16, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh has highlighted the growing impact of integrated watershed development in advancing environmental rehabilitation and agricultural transformation in Garamuleta, in Meira Gudina Kebele of Grawa Woreda, East Hararghe Zone in the Oromia Region.

In his social media post, the Deputy Prime Minister described Garamuleta as “blessed with rich history and breathtaking natural beauty,” adding that it is “becoming a shining example of agricultural development and environmental conservation.”

He further noted that the visited watershed development project “beautifully demonstrates how environmental protection and increased productivity can go hand in hand,” underscoring its role as an integrated model of rural transformation.

Temesgen emphasized that, through integrated efforts, the area is expanding fruit and vegetable farming, forestry, and broader agricultural activities, which he said are contributing significantly to the national agricultural transformation agenda.

He also highlighted that local farmers, organized in clusters, are engaged in horticulture, fruit production, livestock development, and beekeeping, with these integrated farming initiatives playing what he described as a “vital role in achieving our national goal of food self-sufficiency.”

The Deputy Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the local community, stating in his post that they extended “warm welcome and genuine respect” during his visit.

He added that, “together, we are transforming our landscapes into productive and sustainable hubs of prosperity,” reflecting the broader vision behind ongoing watershed development efforts.

The initiative forms part of wider national efforts aimed at transforming rehabilitated landscapes into productive and sustainable agricultural hubs.
