Deputy PM Launches Third National “Clean Ethiopia for the Next Generation” Campaign in Hawassa

Addis Ababa, July 4, 2026 (FMC) – Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Temesgen Tiruneh, today launched the Third National “Clean Ethiopia for the Next Generation” Campaign in Hawassa, renewing the government’s call for collective action toward building a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable nation.

The launch event was held in Hawassa, bringing together government officials and stakeholders to kick-start this year’s nationwide environmental and public awareness campaign.

In his address, the Deputy Prime Minister said the campaign reflects a renewed national commitment to safeguarding the environment for current and future generations, emphasizing that issues such as plastic waste, pollution, and excessive noise go beyond environmental concerns and directly affect public health, economic opportunities, tourism, investment, and the country’s long-term development.

He noted that this year’s initiative is closely aligned with ongoing national programs, including the Green Legacy Initiative, corridor development works, and riverbank rehabilitation efforts, describing it as a results-oriented campaign focused on measurable impact, institutional accountability, and lasting behavioral change.

The Deputy Prime Minister further stressed that the success of the campaign depends on the active participation of all sectors of society, including government institutions, the private sector, civil society, religious organizations, communities, and individual citizens.

He underscored that collective unity and coordinated action remain essential in addressing national challenges and advancing environmental protection efforts across the country.

He also stated that the ultimate legacy to be passed on to future generations should be not only a prosperous nation but also a clean, green, healthy, and sustainable Ethiopia, free from pollution and other social and environmental challenges.

The campaign is expected to be implemented nationwide, reinforcing Ethiopia’s broader environmental protection and sustainable development agenda.
