Election Materials Distribution Intensifies Across Ethiopia Ahead of Nationwide Vote

Addis Ababa, May 21, 2018 (FMC) — The distribution of election materials to polling stations has continued across several regions of Ethiopia as preparations advance for the 7th general election scheduled for May 24, 2018.

The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) said logistical operations are being carried out in an organized and coordinated manner nationwide, with ballot papers, ballot boxes, registration materials, stamps, and other essential voting supplies being dispatched to constituencies and polling stations under tight security arrangements.

In the Harari and Gambella regions, election materials are being delivered to polling stations, with officials confirming that preparations have been finalized to ensure smooth voting. In Harari, the regional election office reported that hundreds of polling stations have been fully prepared, while in Gambella, distribution efforts have expanded across constituencies, with some materials transported by helicopter to hard-to-reach areas such as Akobo district due to geographical barriers and river systems.

In Oromia region, distribution is underway in multiple constituencies. In Asela constituency, officials confirmed that materials are being delivered carefully to all polling stations. Similarly, in Ambo city administration, electoral authorities stated that necessary preparations have been completed, with materials including ballot papers and other supplies dispatched to dozens of polling stations across the city and surrounding zones.

In other parts of Oromia, preparations are also ongoing to ensure timely delivery and readiness for election day.

In Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State, distribution is ongoing in Assosa Hoha and Assosa Megele constituencies, where coordinators said efforts are being made to ensure all polling stations receive materials before the deadline. Authorities emphasized coordinated logistical arrangements to guarantee access across all areas of the region.

In the Amhara region, election material transport has been progressing across different zones, including Awi Zone, where officials said distributions are being completed on schedule. Community members have also reportedly been supporting the process as part of broader national preparations.

In Fnote Selam city of West Gojam Zone, officials confirmed that materials are being distributed to 89 polling stations, with preparations expected to be finalized ahead of voting. Similarly, distribution activities are continuing in other constituencies across the region.

In the South Ethiopia Region, election officials said all preparations have been finalized, with materials being securely transported to polling stations under police escort. Authorities reported that the process is being conducted in an organized manner across thousands of polling stations, with voters encouraged to participate actively in the upcoming election.

Across all regions, NEBE reiterated that preparations are at an advanced stage and that all necessary materials are being delivered in time to ensure the smooth conduct of voting on election day.
