Ethiopia, Germany Strengthen Partnership Through High-Level Diplomatic Talks

Addis Ababa, July 15, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation in foreign investments, green energy, qualified legal labor migration, and climate action during high-level diplomatic talks in Addis Ababa.

German Federal Foreign Office State Secretary Géza Andreas von Geyr concluded a two-day official visit to Ethiopia and the African Union on July 13 and 14.

During his meeting with Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos, von Geyr said Ethiopia is a key partner for Germany in Africa and expressed Germany’s commitment to strengthening relations in all areas.

The two sides also reaffirmed their readiness to work closely as Ethiopia prepares to host COP32, highlighting their shared commitment to climate action.

During the visit, von Geyr held the first Germany–African Union Strategic Dialogue on Foreign and Security Policy with AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Bankole Adeoye.

The dialogue addressed multilateralism, global conflicts, and peace and security challenges in Africa, including in the Sahel, Great Lakes region, Sudan, and Somalia.

Germany, the African Union’s largest bilateral partner, has made investments exceeding one billion euros since 2002 and remains committed to supporting the AU’s peace, security, and governance architecture.

Von Geyr also visited the Federal Technical and Vocational Training Institute in Addis Ababa, which will participate in a pilot initiative aimed at facilitating qualified legal labor migration through vocational training opportunities in Germany.

He concluded his Ethiopia visit with tours of the National Museum of Ethiopia, Holy Trinity Cathedral, and Fendika Cultural Center, where he highlighted Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage and Addis Ababa’s role as a modern African hub.
