#Ethiopia Moves to Give Its Century-Old Türkiye Ties Greater Economic and Diplomatic Weight

Addis Ababa, September 8, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia is determined to translate its century-old relationship with Türkiye into greater economic, social and diplomatic gains, with stronger party-to-party engagement emerging as an important channel for advancing the broader bilateral partnership, Vice President of the Prosperity Party Adem Farah said.

Adem made the remarks during a meeting with Zafer Sirakaya, Deputy President of Türkiye’s Justice and Development Party (AK Party), on the sidelines of a political parties’ consultation forum underway in the Republic of Korea.

He said strengthening relations between the Prosperity Party and AK Party would make a significant contribution to consolidating the multifaceted ties between Ethiopia and Türkiye, stressing the need for sustained engagement and practical follow-up.

He also underscored the importance of translating the understandings reached through repeated consultations between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan into concrete outcomes that further advance bilateral relations.

In this regard, he said the memorandum of understanding signed by the Prosperity Party and AK Party in 2025 should be supported by regular joint platforms and a mechanism dedicated to closely following up its detailed implementation.

Recalling that Türkiye has maintained an embassy in Addis Ababa for 100 years, Adem said the Prosperity Party is committed to building on the depth of the relationship and turning its longstanding foundation into stronger economic, social and diplomatic cooperation.

The two sides highlighted the opportunities created by the longstanding relationship for expanded cooperation in trade, investment and international affairs, while recognizing party-to-party engagement as a means of sustaining and broadening that cooperation.

They further emphasized the need to move planned initiatives into implementation, particularly those aimed at expanding mutual benefits, strengthening bilateral relations and building the capacity of political leaders through continued experience-sharing and capacity-building platforms.

The discussions point to an effort to give the Ethiopia–Türkiye relationship greater institutional depth, linking political-party cooperation with the wider economic and diplomatic interests of the two countries.
