Addis Ababa, May 17, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said construction of the Gode Urea Fertilizer Plant project in Somali Regional State is progressing steadily, with implementation activities advancing as planned across multiple sections of the site.
The Gode Urea Fertilizer Plant project, being developed by Ethiopian Investment Holdings in partnership with the Dangote Group, is a large-scale industrial fertilizer production complex designed to produce 3 million metric tons of urea annually, and is intended to strengthen Ethiopia’s agricultural productivity, food security, industrial growth, and economic self-reliance.
In a social media post shared Sunday following his visit to the project area in Gode, the Prime Minister said that the project has recorded encouraging progress, noting that he was encouraged by the steady momentum observed across the construction site, adding: “Construction activities are advancing as planned across multiple sections of the site, reflecting the strong commitment and collaboration driving this important national project forward.”
PM Abiy visited the construction site together with African business magnate Aliko Dangote to assess the ongoing implementation of the project.

It is a strategic investment in Ethiopia’s agricultural transformation, food security, industrial growth, and economic self-reliance.”

Abiy further noted that once completed, the fertilizer plant will significantly strengthen domestic production capacity, reduce dependence on imported fertilizer, support millions of farmers, and create new opportunities for jobs and investment, stating: “Once completed, the fertilizer plant will play a vital role in strengthening local production capacity, reducing dependence on imports, supporting millions of farmers, and creating new opportunities for jobs and investment.”
The Prime Minister also recalled that Ethiopia and the Dangote Group signed a landmark shareholders’ agreement for the project in August 2025 in Addis Ababa in the presence of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and added: “In August, in partnership with the Dangote Group, we made significant progress by signing a landmark shareholders’ agreement for a fertilizer plant with a planned annual production capacity of 3 million metric tons of urea.”
The Prime Minister later laid the foundation stone for the project in Gode, Somali Regional State, in October 2025, officially launching construction works for the large-scale fertilizer manufacturing facility, noting: “In October 2025, we officially launched construction of the project.”
