Aviation Leaders Gather in Addis Ababa to Advance Africa’s Air Transport Transformation
Addis Ababa, April 29, 2026 (FMC) – An international aviation industry meeting has kicked off in Addis Ababa, bringing together global and regional aviation leaders to discuss the future of air transport across Africa under the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Focus Africa initiative.
The meeting, hosted by Ethiopian Airlines, has convened airline executives, regulators, and policymakers to review ongoing progress and set priorities aimed at strengthening safety, improving connectivity, and enhancing operational efficiency across the continent.
The discussions form part of the broader IATA Focus Africa initiative, which seeks to address structural challenges in African aviation while unlocking the sector’s growth potential through policy alignment, infrastructure development, and regulatory cooperation.
Key agenda items include strengthening aviation safety systems, advancing intra-African connectivity in line with the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), and accelerating digital transformation in airline and airport operations. Participants are also expected to explore measures to reduce operational costs and improve competitiveness across the sector.
Africa’s aviation industry continues to be viewed as a key driver of economic integration and development, with stakeholders emphasizing the need for coordinated reforms to address regulatory fragmentation and cost inefficiencies.
Ethiopian Airlines, a leading continental carrier and frequent host of major aviation forums, is playing a central role in facilitating the discussions, which will continue over the coming days through technical sessions and policy dialogues.
